The Big Trip (a few years in the making)

Full disclosure.

This blog had been a few years in the making. Yes, years.

I’m thoroughly embarrassed to admit this but I first registered this domain in 2012….ouch...there it is.

Most online/entrepreneur/blogging experts extol the virtues of getting to market quickly preaching to “just ship it”, “fail fast” and “create a minimum viable product.” They say if you are not embarrassed by your first blog/product/website then you waited too long.

Well, seems like I accomplished both. I waiting too long and I’m still embarrassed.

I write professionally for clients - blog posts, marketing plans, media pitches, etc. - but after starting a family I found myself with fewer and fewer hours to write for myself. I tried from time to time to post on various topics but never found a subject to keep me engaged for long.

But it was in early in 2012 when I stumbled upon a community of online dads who were posting on Twitter about a great experience they were having at the Dad 2.0 Summit.

What I discovered was a group of dads who, like myself, strive to be more intentional about fatherhood. I was pretty envious of their Dad 2.0 experience. They were conversing with companies and brands who understand dads and the role we play in the lives of their children. They were networking and connecting with other dads becoming the voice of modern fatherhood.

They say you should find a niche that intersects and aligns your passion. Seems like I had finally found it.

So I registered my domain and began to write. I kept the blog private afraid to hit publish thinking it wasn’t good enough and thinking no one would really care what I have to say. But I kept writing.

Fast forward to early 2015...I stumbled upon a post by author and entrepreneur Chris Guillebeau titled:

THE BIG TRIP (AKA “ONE SMALL THING CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE”)

In this post, Chris tells his story of moonlighting trying to start a business and finding a marketing conference that caught his attention. In spite of his fears, he traveled halfway around the world from Liberia to Chicago to attend. Chris picked up a few actionable business ideas but noted that the most impactful takeaway from that trip was “the knowledge that I applied myself, that I’d taken action on a new idea and made something happen—that was worth so much to me.”

My ‘Big Trip”

About a year ago in early 2015, in an effort to push myself out of my comfort zone of complacency, I bought a ticket to the Dad 2.0 Summit 2016. I’ve been slowly progressing on my blog and am looking forward to taking this small step to apply myself and take action on an idea.

To the Dad 2.0 community, I’m looking forward to jumping and seeing how I can contribute.

To Chris Guillebeau - thanks for the reminder to take that trip, bet on myself and know by doing so that I just may come across that one... small... thing… that may change my life.

See you in DC.
